RANZCO has announced this year’s postponed 52nd Annual Scientific Congress will take place in November 2021, with Brisbane remaining as the host city.
The college revealed the new event details this week, alongside an extensive list of local and international speakers that include Australian Professors Alex Hewitt and Graham Barrett, as well as Glaswegian consultant ophthalmologist Dr David Lockington.
The 20/21 congress will take place between 19-23 November 2021, at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition centre.
The new details come after RANZCO announced last month that it would postpone this year’s congress, scheduled for October, due to the COVID-19 crisis. It explored turning the event into a virtual meeting, however this was ruled out due to a range of factors.
After celebrating its 50th anniversary at the 2019 congress, RANZCO is optimistic about the 2021 event.
“Having taken a year off, we believe that the congress in Brisbane will be even more informative and enjoyable for everyone involved. The 2021 congress will be an opportunity to look towards the next 50 years of science, ophthalmology and the college,” RANZCO stated on its new congress website.
“The stunning and sunny location of Brisbane is the perfect location to reinvigorate the mind and the senses wherein the congress will provide a robust array of science and thought-provoking content.”
The announced local and international invited speakers include:

- Professor Graham Barrett – Sir Norman Gregg Lecture
- Dr Catherine Green – Fred Hollows Lecture
- Dr Clare Fraser – Council Lecture
- Lynn K Gordon MD – Neuro-ophthalmology Update Lecture
- Dr David Lockington – Cataract Update Lecture
- Anita Agarwal MD – Retina Update Lecture
- Pradeep Ramulu MD – Glaucoma Update Lecture
- Damien Gatinel MD – Refractive Update Lecture
Alongside the speakers will be a range of concurrent symposia, courses, papers, posters, films and rapid-fire sessions. The congress will also include a social program that will allow time to network with colleagues.
Additionally, on 13 June, 2020, the RANZCO Council will vote on a President-elect. The handover of presidents traditionally occurs at congress. There will be a virtual handover with the ceremonial aspects to occur in 2021.
For Fellows, Trainees and Specialist International Medical Graduates (SIMGs) hoping to participate in the Graduation Ceremony in 2020, arrangements will be made to ensure this occurs in 2021.
